Communications technology is advancing at lightning speed. The telecom industry is promoting a race to deploy and install new 5th Generation Wireless (5G) technology across the nation as the fastest, most connected, wireless communications innovation in history. But many questions remain unanswered. What is really driving this race? Why is it needed? What are the risks, and what are the alternatives?
Federal and state efforts are suddenly underway to preempt local government authority over siting and management of cell sites and antennas, causing loss of local control over this new wireless infrastructure. The Arizona League of Cities and Towns is challenging these FCC rules in federal court as unconstitutional and represents federal overreach.
Further, the FCC has authorized the removal of copper wire landlines, thus creating consumer dependency on wireless communications technologies. For the first time, private companies.
With aggressive intervention from various federal authorities will be installing and operating a national wireless communications infrastructure. Unlike existing communications systems, 5G will employ new ultrahigh frequency millimeter wave technology currently used only for military applications. There is limited scientific information available on biological and health effects, and it could also have untested effects on our natural environment, like plants, trees, animals, and soil.
This historic and vast wireless deployment would likely be even more vulnerable to hacking with consequences more far-reaching than the limited connectivity we enjoy today. Consumer purchasing behaviors, physical location, and other personal characteristics will be profiled and stored in large data banks. Personal freedoms could be jeopardized by opportunistic and anti-democratic forces that impose and exploit new technology that connects everyone and everything.

Join the Pima County 5G Awareness Coalition and the Electromagnetic Safety Alliance at a free public forum where some of the nation’s leading communication technology, scientific, EMF protection, and public policy authorities will address these issues and risks and offer practical alternatives and approaches.
